Module 1 :

Module I [ Hours 8]
Metal Cutting theory, Orthogonal cutting and oblique cutting, Tool geometry, MRS and ORS system of nomenclature, Dynamic Shear Strain and dynamic shear stress, force relationship and velocity relationship, Merchant's force equilibrium diagram,
Merhant and Ernst theory, Lee and Shaffer theory,
MODULE II [Hours 8]
Grinding of single point cutting and multipoint cutting tool.
Design of single point cutting tool (Turning, Facing , Parting ), Design of strength and rigidity criteria, Checking of machinability criteria
Design of form tool: Flat form tool and circular form tool
Design of broach : Internal and surface broach, Design of strength and rigidity criteia, Design of teeth profile
Module III Contavt hour 8
Drill bit:Geometry of drill bit, Drilling Torque and Thrust, Design of drill bit
Milling Cutter: Geometry of milling cutter, Milling Torue, Feed force, Vertical force, Axial force
Design of milling cutter: Plain and Face Milling Cutter, Profile Sharpened Milling Cutter and form-relieved milling cutter
Module IV [Hours 6]
Kinematics of machine tools: Drives in machine tools, Mechanical drives for providing rotational motions, Requirements for layout of stepped drive, Designing the layout of mechanical drive, Gear drive for feed motion
Module V [ Hours 6]
Strength and rigidity analysis of machine tool structures: Basic principles of design of strength and rigidity, Optimum design Criteria, Design of lathe beds, Analysis oand design of tailstock assembly
Guide ways and power screws: Classification of guide ways, Design criteria and calculaton for slide ways, Combination guide ways, Design principles of power screws
Machine Tools spindles and and the bearings: Materials of spindle, Effect of machine tool compliance or machining accuracy, Design princilples of spindles

Course Objective

1 .

Understand fundamental concepts in design of cutting tool and machine tool

2 .

To learn knowledge of tool design for industial application

3 .

To be acquainted with different influencing factors, and the methods of controlling, the quality of products, in particular strength, rigidity and dimensional accuracy for design of cutting tool and machine tool.

4 .

Relate theory plasticity and elasticity to cutting tool design and machine tool design
