Module 1 :

Module 1: Fundamentals of Optical Communication: Characteristics of optical transmission media, Optical fibers: Preparation and transmission characteristics, Loss and dispersion mechanisms
Module 2: Optical Sources and Detectors: Optical sources: LED, Laser diodes Photo detectors: Principles of operation, circuits, and performance, Preamplifiers and post-detection amplifiers
Module 3: Optical Components and Signal Processing: Optical components: Couplers, multiplexers, Arrayed Waveguide Grating (AWG), Wavelength converters, Optical Fiber Communication Systems: Intensity modulation/direct detection systems, Link budget using direct detection, Coherent optical communication systems
Module 4: Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM) and Elastic Optical Networks (EONs): Coherent and WDM systems, Routing and Wavelength Assignment (RWA): Different Wavelength Assignment (WA) techniques, Fundamentals of Elastic Optical Networks, Routing and Spectrum Allocation (RSA) schemes

Course Objective

Understand and analyze the constructional parameters of optical fibers

Be able to design the optical system.

3 .

Link budget calculation of optical fiber communication.

4 .

To understand different multiplexing techniques of optical fiber communication.

Course Outcome

1 .

1. To understand basic fiber parameters,
2. Estimate the losses due to attenuation, absorption, scattering and bending
3, Calculate the system link loss, distortion and dynamic range of an optical link.
4. To understand the working of optical sources and receivers.
5. To understand the basic principle of optical networks.
