Rourkela

A large
industrial town, girdled by a range of hills and encircled by
rivers, Rourkela came into prominence with the establishment
of first of three public sector steel plants set up
in India in 1955.
Situated in the mineral belt of Orissa, Rourkela marked a new
era in the steel industry of India being the only steel plant
devoted primarily to the production of flat products and sheets.
Considered as one of the major business centers of Eastern India,
it has the advantage of availability of modern infrastructure,
high percentage of qualified people, low cost of living and
low manpower cost. Steel Plant, Larsen & Toubro, Otto India,
Orind, Orissa Cement Limited and many other medium and small
scale industries dot the city map and its periphery.
The city now boasts of various money-spinning Sponge Iron Plants,
Induction Arc Furnaces and Ferro Alloy units. The city being
the latest addition to the Software Technology Parks
of India (STPI) map is now poised to become the new
IT destination. |

Spread over an area of about 45 sq. kms, with a population
of approximately 5 lakhs, this is the biggest planned town in Orissa
which exudes an air of freshness and tranquility and has become the
nerve center of all social and cultural activities of the district.
Rourkela serves as the most convenient base for visiting places of
interest in the district of Sundargarh. Being cosmopolitan in nature,
the city has a large pool of Hindi and English speaking people. |

Rourkela also holds a place of prominence in the educational
map of the country. National Institute of Technology (NIT), Padmanava
College of Engineering, Purushottam Institute of Engineering &
Technology, Indian Institute of Production Managment, Rourkela Institute
of Management Studies are the major technical institutes. Students
from all over the country converge here to avail high quality education.
Numerous good schools and general colleges provide a good educational
base to the children. |
