Places of Religious Interest |

| Vedvyas, situated
on the confluence of two rivers, Sankha and Koel, is not only
a place of beauty but also a place of pilgrimage. Tradition
has it that Vyasadeva, the reputed sage lived here and composed
the great epic, Mahabarata. There are three temples here, two
dedicated to Lord Shiva and one to Rama. A vedic ashram and
a school on the lines of gurukul are added attractions of the
place. An ideal picnic spot, it is 5 kms from panposh and 15
kms from Rourkela. Connected by an all weather road, regular
bus service is available from rourkela. |
Hanuman
Batika, in the centre of the city, is the showpiece
of Rourkela. A 75-feet tall Hanuman statue welcomes visitors
to the steel city. Sculpted by Sri Laxmana Swami the statue
is said to be the tallest of Lord Hanuman in India. The
sprawling temple complex spread over 13 acres of land
houses temples of all important Hindu deities.
Ghogar, A gorge
on the river Ib, extending over 5 km, it is popular as
a picnic spot. A naturally formed Siva Lingam of black
granite worshipped by the local people, is an additional
attraction.

Dams and Waterfalls
Mandira,
known for the dam across the river Sankha, constructed
for supply of water to rourkela and other places
in the vicinity, represents a picturesque site.
Permission to enter the dam site is issued by
an officer at the main entrance. Boating facilities
are available in the lake on prior arrangement
with the dam authorities. 32 kms from Rourkela,
it is a nice place for holidaying. There is
no regular bus service, but taxis and autorickshaws
are available from rourkela at reasonable rates.
Pitamahal Dam on
river Brahmani is famous for a small dam project
and ideal for a quiet outing. |

Kandadhar
Amidst thick jungles, Khandadhar is a glittering
waterfall created by a perennial rivulet called
Korapani Nala within a few kms. of its origin.
244 meters in height it is said to be the highest
waterfall in Orissa. Nearby the local tribals
worship a deity known as Goddess Kanta. 114
Km from Rourkela via Bonaigarh, it offers a
delightfully refreshing sight.
Mirig Khog water fall, a picnic
spot, 111 kms from Rourkela is another haunt
of tourists. |

Darjeeng, situated on national
highway no.23, is a beautiful place on the river Brahmani.
Ideal for picnickers it comes alive during winters.
Deogarh, a gorge on the river lies closeby.
Tensa lies at a distance of 110 km
and at a height of 3780 ft. SAIL carries on various
mining activities centering round Tensa Mountain. The
beautiful hills makes a good get-away for quiet weekends.

| Parks |
The Indira Gandhi Park, lies adjacent
to the Ring Road in Sector 4 of the Steel Township. The
lush green hedge, an attractive grass meadow and gardens
full of varieties of seasonal flowers are a characteristic
feature of this park. Toy train, mini zoo, doll museum,
and an aquarium make it an ideal place for spending an
evening out with children and guests. Jubliee
Park and Mrig Vihar Situated in Sector 8, it
has a deer park and musical fountains.

Places of historical interest |
Junagarh About 180 kms from Rourkela,
a fort of historical and archaeological importance with caves
having marks of Tantra Worship. UshaKothi
47 kms from Sundargarh, the rock-cut caves contain
some pictographic writings that are yet to be deciphered.
