DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE & ENGINEERING

Department of Computer Science & Engineering, NIT, Rourkela was established in 1982. Since its inception, the Department is under dynamic progress and is able to establish the reputation for imparting quality education both at undergraduate and graduate programmes. The department has well equipped modern laboratories such as Software Engineering, Information Security & Data Communication, Image Processing & Cluster Computing and Advanced Database Engineering Labs for pursuing research keeping in view of the technological advancement.

ABOUT THE COURSE

Embedded devices are now vastly outnumbering the traditional computers. These are a type of real-time systems. In recent times, the real-time computers have become ubiquitous and have a large number of application areas. According to a recent estimate 70% of the total processors manufactured world-wide are deployed in real-time embedded applications. It can be noticed that several gadgets and applications which have today become indispensable to our everyday life, are based on embedded real-time systems. The phenomenal reasons behind this growth in the use of real-time systems in the recent years are the manifold reductions in size and the cost of computers with magical improvements to their performance with reduced power consumption. The rapid growth of applications deploying real-time technologies has been matched by the evolutionary growth of the underlying technologies supporting the development of real-time systems. This course aims at discussing some of the core technologies used in the development of real-time systems. This course keeps the hardware discussions to the bare minimum and gives importance to the software issues. The software issues that will be addressed in the course are quite expansive. Some of them are - operating system and program development issues, networking issues and database issues. The course will also cover some important features of commercial real-time operating systems. The course will also include the multi-processor real-time systems and distributed real-time systems. Besides, the course will contain some laboratory classes to demonstrate the working of some available real-time operating systems such as RT-Linux etc.
