About Humanities & Social Sciences Department

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences aims at enhancing students’ communication, management and social skills to enable them to become successful and effective in the workplace. The subjects offered by the Department are a common component of an NIT student’s undergraduate education, providing a foundation of knowledge and information which allows him to meet the demands of his profession that have increased worldwide. The students understand that today’s challenges are global and interdisciplinary and they are required to reflect more social responsibility flexibility, resourcefulness and creativity.

Currently, the department offers Elective courses from the four disciplines of Economics, English, Psychology and Sociology at U.G and P.G levels. The Department also offers PhD programmes in the said disciplines. The faculty has a good number of research and conference publications at national and international level. Some of the key research areas of the Department are International Finance, Financial Economics, Economic Growth and Development, Health Economics, Econometrics, Organizational Learning, HRM, Emotional Intelligence, Theory of Mind, Service Quality Evaluation, English Language Teaching, Linguistics, Indian Literature in English, Indian Writing in English, Indian Sexualities, Sambalpuri Literature and Culture, Natural Resource Management, Tribal and Rural Development, and Agrarian Studies.

In addition, the Department hosts Lectures and Conferences to expose the students to real life work experiences as well as for helping them to enhance their self-esteem. Since long, it has been sharing the Institute's responsibility of building holistic technocrats. The Department also offers short term training courses under Continuing Education Programme of the Institute from time to time.

A state-of-the art Multimedia Digital Language Laboratory with Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) facilities has been set up in the Department to develop the English language proficiency of the students and to meet the growing market demand of a smart and articulate workforce.

Research activities have been undertaken through Major and Minor Projects in the recent past. The Department is going to offer a two-year PG Programme in Development Studies from the next academic year.
