About Chemical Engineering Department

Welcome to the Department of Chemical Engineering at National Institute of Technology, Rourkela. It is one of the Nation's leading institutions in both the teaching and research of Engineering Sciences. The department was established in the year 1963 with undergraduate program and initiated postgraduate (M. Tech.) program in Coal Chemicals and Fertilizers in the year of 1981. The M. Tech. program on Coal Chemicals and Fertilizer has been discontinued followed by starting of M. Tech. degree in "Chemical Engineering". The department also offers Ph.D. (Regular, Sponsored, and QIP) and M. Tech (Res) degrees. The Chemical Engineering programme at NIT, Rourkela, with its interdisciplinary flavors along with its diversified structure is dedicated to the aspiring students and mentoring them for the broad spectrum of Chemical Engineering careers. The department emphasizes programs in both engineering and research. Above and beyond the classes, all the students carry out independent research through project and thesis work.

How the Chemical Engineering Programme builds you?

The Department has an excellent ensemble of dynamic; goal oriented, highly qualified and experienced faculty members. The curricula at both the undergraduate and graduate levels are designed to support and foster Chemical Engineering as a profession, which interfaces Engineering with all aspects of Basic Sciences. Keeping in view of the current and future requirements of the academia and industry, the faculty of Chemical Engineering offers a wide spectrum of courses supplemented by a number of electives in the emerging areas at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. In order to ensure a broad-based education, both the theory and practical aspects of Chemical Engineering discipline are emphasized. The department has a very good computational facility and equipped with process simulators like Fluent, Aspen Plus, Super Target, MATLAB etc. The postgraduate curriculum is very ambitious with it's modern courseware and a huge impetus is provided to the postgraduate students to develop the computational skill, designing new experiments, and pursuing time bound research projects. The courses like Computational Fluid Dynamics, Advanced Separation Technology, Advanced Process Control, Process Plant Simulation, Non-equilibrium Mass Transfer, Advanced Thermodynamics, Interfacial Science and Engineering, Nanotechnology, Evolutionary Computation and Process Integration & Energy Engineering are the articulates of the graduate curriculum. The doctoral program is primarily for the students who wish to carry out independent research having a commendable combination of fundamentals, analytical aptitude and numerical skills. The PhD degree is the recognition of one's independent creative ability to research, delineate and solving novel/significant scientific and/or engineering problems. The competent Ph. D students are eligible for institute scholarship and they can also be supported financially from the project grant with the consent of the concerned faculty.

Research Facilities

The Department is committed to a high quality research programme in a wide spectrum of areas like, Process Modeling and Simulation, Process Control, Reaction Engineering, Fluidization Engineering, Interfacial Science and Engineering, Nanotechnology, Membrane Separation, Fluid Phase Equilibrium, Evolutionary Computations, Process Integration & Energy Engineering, Environmental Biotechnology, Biochemical Engineering, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Heat transfer, Industrial Pollution Control, and Coal Chemicals. The faculty and students are actively involved in both fundamental and applied research. The department has a good infrastructure and research facility with many sophisticated instruments like HPLC, Gas Chromatograph, Nanoparticle size and Zeta potential analyzer, UV-Vis-NIR Spectrophotometer, Fluorescence Spectrometer, BET surface area analyzer, Surface tensiometer, Quartz Crystal Micro balance, Video based contact angle meter, Viscometer, TOC analyzer, TGA-DTA, Optical Microscope, Bioreactor, In situ Fermentor/Bioreactor etc. The Department, at its appraisal is having a number of R&D and consultancy projects funded by various government as well as non-government organizations like MoEF, DST, DBT, UGC, KVIC, IE etc.
