Abstract
::
Cannabis based products are widely consumed in India (next to alcohol) due to their euphoric effects. Although the toxicity associated with cannabis abuse is very low, the recent studies have suggested that coronary and cerebral ischemia, tachyarrhythmia and even sudden death are precipitated in the persons consuming cannabis products. The current study proposes the processing and analysis of ECG signals acquired from volunteers (paddy field workers from Sambalpur district, Odisha), who regularly abuse Cannabis sativa (bhang) to understand the effect of cannabis sativa abuse on cardiac health. ECG signals, acquired from paddy field workers who restrain from the abuse of bhang, were considered as control group. In an attempt to understand the effect of cannabis (bhang) abuse on the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and the cardiac physiology of the Indian women working in paddy fields, ECG signals were collected from 25 female volunteers, and RR intervals (RRIs) were extracted. Recurrence analysis of RRI series suggested a reduction in the isometric recurrence and heart rate stability in women abusing cannabis. The effect on ANS was estimated using non-invasive heart rate variability (HRV) analysis. The results suggested a decline in the sympathovagal balance and the parasympathetic activity following regular cannabis abuse. The effect of cannabis abuse on the heart was examined using time-domain and wavelet-based analysis of ECG signals. The results suggested an alteration in the cardiac electrophysiology of the female volunteers due to the cannabis abuse. In the proposed study, ECG signal were further acquired from 100 male paddy-field workers (each group containing 50 volunteers). The non-linear recurrence analysis of the acquired ECG signals suggested an alteration in the electrophysiology of the male volunteers due to the abuse of bhang. In future, the effect of cannabis abuse on heart of the male paddy-field workers will be further analyzed using the time-domain and joint time-frequency domain analysis methods and the effect on ANS will be investigated using the HRV analysis.
