Biju Patnaik Central Library (BPCL)

The Central Library of NITR has just been named after Biju Patnaik - the former Chief Minister of Orissa. It has been started functional since 1965. At present, the library presently holds about 59,000 books and 15,000 back volumes of periodicals. Apart from the online journals and standards provided by INDEST-AICTE consortium, the library has purchased license to access more than 2000 online science and technology research journals to support local research activity. Prior to that, the BPCL has many ISI codes, educational video courses & cassettes and CD-ROMS etc.

The BPCL is automated with integrated library software package called Libsys – LSmart and modernized with latest Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) based automation system that facilitates self check-in, self check-out and automatic security system. This technology offers fastest, easiest, most efficient way to track, locate and manage library materials. The RFID system counts more than 1.2 lakhs transactions (issue, return and renewal) in a year.

Central Library Initiatives
The BPCL had undertaken various initiatives such as Institutional Repository (IR), Electronic Thesis and Dissertations (ETD), Web-based video courses, Blog etc.
  • IR is an open access repository system http://dspace.nitrkl.ac.in/dspace to make the local research outputs (journal papers, conference papers, book chapters and doctoral theses) visible and accessible to the globe without any barrier. It holds a little less than 1256 documents presently.

  • ETD is an institutional open access thesis and dissertations repository of National Institute of Technology Rourkela http://ethesis.nitrkl.ac.in/. It is mandatory for students of all courses (BTech, MTech, MTech by Research, MSc and PhD) and from all disciplines to upload the final version of the theses submitted as partial fulfillment of degree.

  • Web-based video courses called ‘OpenCourseWare’ http://dlib.nitrkl.ac.in/videocourse/of NPTEL program is collaborative project of IITs and IISc Bangalore. The library acquired 5 major engineering disciplines such as civil, computer science and engineering, electrical, electronics and communication and mechanical engineering at the undergraduate (B.E./B.Tech) level.

  • Blog called ‘Library Services Blog’ is an intellectual tool of information publication and dissemination for local users. It alerts and informs patrons about the late developments in the field of science, engineering, technology, management and humanities.

  • Open Access to Oriya Books (OAOB) http://oaob.nitrkl.ac.in/ is a not-for-profit project, initiated by National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, Srujanika, Bhubaneswar and Pragati Utkal Sangh, Rourkela. The mission of the project is to preserve cultural history of Orissa by digitizing old, rare and new literary and other texts written in the Oriya language.
